This surprise proposal took place at sunset at the St. Pete Pier with Will and Shayla. Will reached out ahead of time with a clear plan: he wanted to propose on their anniversary, and he wanted it to feel natural and unexpected. He told Shayla they were going to dinner to celebrate, and the idea was that as soon as they arrived at the pier, he would stop and propose before they headed inside.
We coordinated the timing to line up with the sunset so the sky would have warm, golden tones and soft, flattering light. The St. Pete Pier is an ideal location for proposals because it offers open waterfront views, clean modern lines, and enough foot traffic for me to blend in without being noticed. The weather cooperated—clear skies, a light breeze coming off the water, and a sunset that shifted from warm orange to soft pink.
When the couple arrived, the light was at its peak. Will followed the plan, paused at the selected spot, and got down on one knee. Shayla was completely surprised. Her reaction was emotional, immediate, and genuine, which made the moment easy to capture from a distance without interrupting.
After the proposal, we used the remaining sunset light for a short portrait session around the pier. We photographed along the waterfront railing, near the landscaped walkways, and in front of the open water where the sky reflected beautifully.
As an engagement and proposal photographer in the Tampa Bay area, I like recommending the St. Pete Pier for sessions like this because it provides reliable sunset views, modern architecture, and plenty of space to move without interference. This proposal went smoothly, stayed on schedule, and resulted in a mix of candid emotional moments and clean portrait images.
